Psoriasis

Psoriasis lesionPsoriasis does not discriminate; it has dispensed its misery to those in all walks of life and ethnicities for centuries. Unfortunately, this is one of the rare cases where tolerance will not be tolerated! We are working to rid the world of this “equal opportunity disorder,” but, regrettably, there is not yet a cure for psoriasis. Until that day comes, you can control your psoriasis and dramatically improve your quality of life.

Psoriasis manifests as red, scaling plaques that often itch and bleed. It commonly occurs on the elbows and knees, but it can be found anywhere on the body, including the face and scalp. Psoriasis can be progressive and may appear at any time during one’s life. It is one of the most common skin diseases, striking an estimated 5% of the world’s population. While psoriasis is not contagious, it can interfere with normal life and social relationships and may cause many sufferers to isolate themselves.

How can those living with psoriasis lead healthy, normal lives? In my experience, a combination approach is most effective in easing and, in many cases, virtually eliminating the symptoms of psoriasis.

I use many different compounds to achieve a synergistic effect, including topical medications such as anti-inflammatories, tar treatments, vitamin A and D treatments, and our patented CutiCort (clobetasol 0.05%) spray. In addition, phototherapeutic measures such as narrow-band UVB phototherapy are also successful. Oral/systemic medications including methotrexate, cyclosporine, and oral retinoids can also boost effectiveness.

A customized treatment plan can significantly reduce symptoms and increase your quality of life. Particularly, the newer injectable biologic agents such as etanercept, alefacept, efalizumab, and adalimumab have resulted in considerable relief for many of my patients, particularly those with associated psoriatic arthritis.
