12 Days of Dermatology – Day Eleven: Cosmetic Surgery

Body_fatInstead of 11 pipers piping or 5 golden rings, look at what Skinsight brings. Whether or not you think you need cosmetic surgery, make sure you make an informed decision.

One of the most important factors when considering a cosmetic surgical procedure is to choose the right doctor. Dermatologists are experts in the medical, surgical, and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair, and nails. With any procedure there are risks, but asking the right questions can help you consider the pros and cons of undergoing surgery.

Some questions to ask, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology, when considering cosmetic surgery are as follows:

• What are the doctor’s credentials? Is he or she a board-certified dermatologist or other appropriately trained physician? Ask to see the doctor’s credentials.

• How many of these procedures has the physician performed? The procedure should be one that the doctor performs regularly.

• What results can be expected? How long is the recuperation period? Ask to see "before" and "after" photos of the physician’s previous patients.

• What are the risks?

• What is the cost?

Some common procedures are fillers, laser skin resurfacing, liposuction, and radio frequency closure. For more information, click here. ¹
