What causes psoriasis rash?

The infiltration of inflammatory chemical mediators and cells causes the epidermis to proliferate faster than it normally would. This leads to the inability of the cells to mature as they rise from the basal layer of the skin to the outer surface layer. The cells that would normally shed accumulate into the red scaly lesions that are known as psoriatic plaques. Some individuals also have a streptococcal growth or skin infection that triggers psoriasis.

Dr. Lowell Goldsmith and Dr. Jeff Bernhard contributed their expertise on behalf of VisualDx for the above information.
